Description
Circa 1830, French mahogany escritoire. This unusual tall escritoire has a classic cornice on top, and below is an ebony panel with a classical Greek head and wonderful castings of spears, foliate and roundels on each side. The centre has a mirror door, which is bevelled and has the original glass, and opens to show a large cupboard. On either side of the centre of the cabinet are two further ebony panels with large swags, flowers and insects. The main section has a flame mahogany panel – this is the secretaire which opens to show an unusual mulberry interior with various drawers and cupboard, and a small lockable door in the centre. The writing surface is mahogany and is crossbanded and also has chequered inlay. Below this are three further drawers of various sizes, all with matching veneers. Below the bottom drawer is a convex moulded base, a simple apron and the escritoire stands on large block feet. The cabinet has the original colour and patination.
