Description

Circa 1880, Chinese carved wood open cabinet/whatnot with enclosed cupboards below. The cabinet has an unusual feature of a three quarter wrap around gallery on the top which encloses the front and sides, in the form of faux bamboo with carved flowers in the centre. Beneath this is a small cornice with carved leaf decoration. On both sides are large open fretwork panels, Rococo in style and varying in and pattern. The back of the cabinet has faux bamboo quarter brackets and these are mirrored on the front at the top. There is an unusual formation of six shelves at different heights, all with three quarter wrap around galleries with floral decoration and the edging is again the form of bamboo. At the bottom on the left hand side is a cupboard door with several beadings all in the form of bamboo, a carved panel on the door and a cast brass handle. On the opposite side is a small drawer again with a cast brass handle and a foliate carving on the front. The bottom has a wonderful carved apron with open fretwork, and the whole piece stands on classic Chinese ball and claw feet. Wonderful original patination, excellent condition. Very good example of this type of furniture.
